BENNY-ABBA'S CREATIVE GENIUS!

Benny the most important member!  * M.B. Tretow the forgotten member! *  Benny's Bio: From youth to ABBA!

I believe that Benny Andersson was the most important member of ABBA because he was the creative musical force behind the band. Isn't that what ABBA were about, great music? Allow me to explain:

I believe that ABBA were comprised of two important components, the "guys" and the "girls" each component equally important. I believe that Frida and Agnetha carried their weight with ABBA and each was equally important in the girl half of the equation. Of course the guys were as important as the girls but between the guys I believe that Benny was the more important male member. I'd say that of the Guy half of the ABBA equation Benny carried 51% of the importance and Bjorn 49%. Consider these points:

  1. I believe the melodies of ABBA's music are what truly captured the world (yes, the lyrical hooks helped a great deal, but alot of lesser acts had catchy hooks too and they never achieved a level of success like that of ABBA!). We know that Benny was the creator of the melodies. His natural abilities combined with his wonderful Scandinavian music sensibility produced some of the most beautiful melodies created this century. If anyone doubts this fact simply listen to Benny's solo albums "November 1989" and "Klinga Mina Klockor" and eliminate your doubt.

I can be certain that the melodies were most important simply looking at the "other language" versions of ABBA's hit songs. Many of their songs were recorded in languages other than English, ABBA recorded in Swedish, English, French and Spanish as well. The lyrics never translate their meaning exactly. Example: "Gimme, Gimmie, Gimmie", recorded in English, contains the line "Gimmie, Gimmie, Gimmie a Man after Midnight". Whereas in the Spanish version "Dame Dame Dame", the same line "Dame, Dame, Dame Amore despa medio Noche" translates to "Gimme, Gimmie, Gimmie Love after midnight". They are similar but certainly not the same line. Yet most of the songs ABBA recorded in multiple languages were hits in each language in which they were recorded! The constant factor here being the melodies, not the lyrics!

  2. Bjorn was involved, some, with the creation of the melodies (Benny too was involved with some of the lyric writing). But Bjorn generally concentrated on the lyrics. Furthermore, as we all know his ability as a writer in ABBA's early days was limited at best. One only has to listen to the "The King Kong Song" once to realize this fact. Some of these early lyrics are probably what started the music critics on their constant vilification of ABBA's song lyrics during the 70's. (I can't recall any bad reviews of the melodies. Why? They were too good!) However, Bjorn's lyric writing role did grow in importance as ABBA matured, some of his later creations are lyrical pop masterpieces! Conversely, Benny's creative abilities also grew during the same period.

  3. Bjorn has been given some credit as a driving force behind ABBA, he was very ambitious. However, Stig Anderson carried this role with true authority and did not need Bjorn to do the driving he could have handled this task alone! Benny tended to be more lazy and focused on the music, so it is true that he benefited from a motivating force.

  4. Where are Bjorn's solo works?  Frida, Agnetha and Benny have all gone on to create several solo works. Now, I am aware that Bjorn has stayed busy through the years working on "Chess", "Kristina Fran Duvemala", and "Mamma Mia" (not to mention other projects). Additionally, he has assisted with some of Benny's solo works. But doesn't he have anything personal (meaning: solo) to create and share with the world? Hmmm, makes one think eh? Benny's solo works prove to the world that Benny is truly a (the) creator of beautiful, timeless melodies. The melodies that the world loves and longs to hear!

Now I am not here to minimize the contributions of any member of ABBA. I believe that ABBA could not have become the "Swedish Superstars" that they are if the formula had changed. However, I believe that had ABBA been "ABA" (Agnetha, Benny & Anni-Frid) the three would most likely have found success (especially when you consider Stig Anderson's considerable marketing push). Benny was perfectly capable of writing songs (lyrics and especially melodies) and the girls would still have sung just as well and looked just as appealing. But I don't think they'd have become International Superstars, not without Bjorn.

Could Benny and Bjorn have found success with other girls out front? Probably, they put together some wonderful recordings with Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson, but the ABBA formula would have been compromised. After all there was a certain appeal to ABBA's two couple formula. The world loved seeing two young, happy and in-love couples make such wonderful music! Furthermore, there were no drugs, wild sex parties or other bizarre occurrences usually associated with such successful rock and pop acts, and this fact simply added to their appeal!

At this point I'd like to take a moment to mention the often forgotten sixth member of ABBA; Mr. "Micke" B. Tretow.  I consider this man to be absolutely as important as all four members of ABBA and Stig Anderson. Mr. Tretow's sound engineering work was essential to "The ABBA Sound". Had it not been for Mr. Tretow I don't believe that ABBA would have reached that pinnacle of recording quality that they did achieve (the critics never complained about ABBA's wonderful recording quality, in fact it was usually praised!). Furthermore, Mr. Tretow was responsible for creating ABBA's "Wall of Sound", a sound that is uniquely ABBA. All ABBA fans need to keep this man in mind as we enjoy the ABBA music we love so much.

Now, please keep in mind that the above opinions are mine and that in no way am I minimizing any ABBA members contribution to music history. After all, as I said before ABBA could not have existed in any other configuration. I love ABBA's music on a level that is without peer. My simple wish is that, the all too often under appreciated, Benny Andersson should get the recognition he so richly deserves. And that my friend is what this site is about; Benny Anderson-long live Benny and may he continue to create the worlds most beautiful melodies!

Your comments and thoughts are welcome, please post any you have in my guest book!

BENNY: A BRIEF BIOGRAPHY

It's hard to decide where to begin when writing on Benny's wonderful life. So I'll start at the beginning with the basics:

Benny Bror Goran Andersson was born on December 16th, 1946 in rural Stockholm Sweden. Benny was born into a family of music lovers and his father and grandfather were big influences on Benny's early years. Their love of music, especially traditional Swedish Folk Music, was passed on to him and this early exposure can still be heard in the music he creates today.

At the age of six Benny was given his first musical instrument which was an accordion, an appropriate instrument for a young Scandinavian boy of the period. Benny quickly learned to play his new instrument and by the age of ten he was introduced to the piano, a natural progression from the accordion. Benny learned to play, or experimented with, many types of instrument. Music came to Benny naturally and was easy for him to learn. Benny did learn to play piano exceptionally well however, he never learned to read or write music. Reading and writing music, like schooling, was probably too much work and for a musical genius it was unnecessary. Benny was never too interested in school and left at approximately 15 years of age. Music was much too important to Benny to let school interfere! For a short while after leaving school Benny worked for the company that his father operated, his position there was janitorial. However, this was a short lived job for Benny, who was concentrating on his music on the side.

Benny was aquainted with one of the members of the Hepstars (lead singer-Svenne Hedlund). The Hepstars were a Swedish Beatles like band who were gaining popularity in Sweden. When the Hepstars lost their keyboardist Svenne quickly contacted Benny and asked him to join the band, Benny did so without hesitation--it was the fall of 1964. Benny was moderately successful with the Hepstars having written his first few songs for the group, remarkably all were hits in Sweden. The most notable song being "Sunny Girl".

It was during this period of time with the Hepstars that Benny met a young fellow musician, a guitar player. This fellow of similar age was a member of another (moderately) successful Swedish act-The Hootenanny Singers. This fellow, of course, is Bjorn Ulveaus and his band was similar to the popular folk act the Kingston Trio. Benny and Bjorn hit it off when they discovered that they had a lot in common and although they went separate ways with their bands these new friends remained in contact. During a 1969 Hepstar tour guitarist Janne Frisck failed to return from holiday and the band was without a neccessary member. Benny immediately called his friend Bjorn Ulvaeus. This was really Bjorns first brush with pop music and while it was a short touring period it allowed Benny and Bjorn to bond and dream (together) of much bigger things. During this time with the Hepstars Benny and Bjorn penned their first songs as a team. But the best was yet to come...

Later as each man left their respective band (Benny being broke due to a failed attempt with the Hepstars at marketing and publishing music), Benny and Bjorn would team up as a successful duo. "Benny and Bjorn" as they were now called had success throughout Scandinavia and actually broke out of Northern Europe and found success as far away as Japan, "She's my kind of girl" was a huge hit in the land of the rising sun.

Of course by this time (approximately 1969) Bjorn had met Agnetha and Benny was just about to meet Frida. Each were already pop stars in their own right. The next recordings, of course, included the girls! Even though the girls did not always recieve mention they did participate in "En Karusell", "Lycka" and several recordings during this period. Benny and Bjorn's next project was an Album called "Lycka", which in English roughly translates to "Happiness". Certainly this was true for Benny he had finally arrived, and I doubt he could have been happier. Now, finally, all the pieces necessary to form the first (and only) Swedish super group had come together! Within the next three years the duo Benny and Bjorn would evolve into Benny, Bjorn, Anna and Frida and then into ABBA (an acronym created with the first initial of their legal names).

In 1974 ABBA won the Eurovision song contest with their entry "Waterloo", out of thousands of songs entered ABBA had won! And their performance was watched by over 500 million people in more than 30 countries.

The rest as you know is history. By 1978 Atlantic records was reporting that ABBA had outsold the Beatles by selling more than 100 million records world wide! Not bad for a group that had only been around about five years or so. Of course since then the Beatles have gone on to pass up ABBA again. But this was (and still is!) an incredible accomplishment especially when you consider that this feat was accomplished by a Swedish pop group and not British or American act. This feat is unique to ABBA as no other musical act since ABBA can make this claim. I believe that this feat alone indicates just how successful and loved ABBA have been, and remain.
